I see the nerve lines trembling
on upturned faces, hoping
sad, inturned
They are really real
behind their cold commuting masks
So many
all aware
What a whirlwind
imitating order
I can not control
even one of these
Each eye in that swarm
is more unique
than any snowflake
The crowd is not faceless
though it heaves like one wave
Calm is achieved
through separate wills
I am not brave
can not long hold
the crushing person-ness
in naked eyes
Yet flocks of seagulls
display more fury
less habitual compassion
than crowds on buses
I lend my person-ness
to this daily miracle
I must trust in
the kindness of strangers

‘trust in the kindness of strangers’ – the thought lifts my spirit like the wind under a gull’s wings – a trust that has been often proven by strangers in my life.
Hi Panda
That line plays on:
“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” which is an amazingly loaded quote from Tennessee Williams “A Streetcar Named Desire”.
Sometimes strangers can be kinder than family.
